5.2: Phagocytosis
The first line of defence involves physical and chemical barriers that prevent pathogen entry. If pathogens bypass this, phagocytes carry out phagocytosis by engulfing and destroying them with lysosomes. The phagocyte then presents the pathogen’s antigens to activate the specific immune response.
