Week 8 Assignment - Morality & Law
ADJ/215
Week 8 Assignment - Morality & Law
1. Under what circumstances, if any, might the legalization or decriminalization
of drugs be beneficial to society?
a. There are individuals who think that if drugs were legalized then they would not
be as harmful to our society. They say this because the way that drugs are illegal
right now, those who sell the drugs can charge whatever they want for the drugs.
With this being the case, an addict will overlook the truly important things to be
paid for (i.e. food, rent, clothes, or any other essential item to basic human needs)
and spend as much money as they can in order to get their next high. When they
do this, they not only hurting themselves by destroying their bodies, but they are
also hurting the ones that they love.
b. When drugs are illegal, the price of the drugs can grow to outrageous numbers if
the demand is high enough and as such, an addict will do whatever they can in
order to get their next high and that includes committing crimes such as theft,
robbery, or burglary, just to name a few. If drugs were legalized, I think that there
would be much cheaper than they are now and states could regulate the drugs
themselves and make much needed money to help balance the state’s budget, but
should drugs be legalized, I think that more people would be addicts due to the

cheaper prices. The cheaper something is, the more someone will buy and if they
buy in large quantities, they will consume them in large quantities as well.

2. Do you consider alcohol a drug? Should greater control be placed on the sale of
alcohol?
a. This is an interesting question. Personally I do in fact think that alcohol is a drug,
but I know many, many people who would wholeheartedly disagree with me on
this topic. I believe alcohol is a drug because alcohol has an age restriction and
when consumed regularly, individuals can become addicted and when they
become addicted to alcohol, they will do whatever they can in order to get their
next buzz just as a pill addict will do for their next high. Alcohol is extremely
dangerous because people can see it as just another beverage and will consume
drink after drink and when they get drunk, they can make some life altering
decisions not only for themselves, but for others as well.
b. For people that do not think that alcohol is a drug, I will point them toward the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA), who has in fact classified alcohol as a
drug. I will be honest and say that I have indulged in a few beverages from time to
time, but unlike others, I know my limit and can stop after a drink or two. It is
those individuals who do not have that self control that are more likely to become
addicted, or binge drink. With alcohol being so readily available and how about
40 percent of violent crimes in our country linked to alcohol abuse in some way, I
think that the FDA should have even stronger restrictions on alcohol.
