Discussion #8 (due 6/17)
Hypothesis Tests
Applying Hypothesis Tests
1. How would you explain to someone who doesn’t understand statistics the
difference between confidence intervals and hypothesis testing?
The confidence interval is the probable interval within which the population
parameter of interest is expected to lie.
Hypothesis test is the statistical procedure that checks the validity of the
statement given on the population parameter of interest based upon the
point estimate of that parameter obtained from a sample.
2. Find a research article that uses a hypothesis test. Give either the reference for it
or the website address at which you found it. Discuss what the research was trying
to show, as well as the results from the test. Note that others have not read your
article so you’ll need to give a little bit of background information.

The above link directs us to an article that is reported the results of a test
for the Effect of a Brief Music Intervention on Test Anxiety and Exam Scores
in College Undergraduates.
The research was trying to test the claim that there is an effect for music on
test anxiety, but the results indicated that there is no significant effect.
The final results of the research are as stated below:
Discussion #9 (due 6/19)
1. You are conducting a hypothesis test, just as we did in module 8. How do the tests
you just learned about differ from those in module 7?
The tests from those in module 7 are based upon single sample. The tests
in module 8 are bases upon two-samples and more than two samples.
2. Give an example of two categorical variables that you believe would be dependent
on each other.
