Effective Leadership Characteristics and Responsibilities in Policing
Organizations: Enhancing Organizational Success and Officer Development
What is an example of some of the leadership characteristics and responsibilities within
policing organizations? How do these leadership characteristics translate into overall
organizational effectiveness? What recommendations would you suggest so that policing
organizations are more successful?
Leadership characteristics include leading by example, dedication, strong communication and
listening skills and being able to resolve conflict. Leadership responsibilities include holding
all your employees accountability, taking disciplinary actions when needed, providing
acknowledgment for a job well done and informing employees of the guidelines and
expectations. A team is only as strong as its supervisor. I have noticed that the difference
between cycles that work my shift is that the employees tend to emulate their supervisors. If
the supervisor is a ball of fire that is all about making a difference and stats then the
employees will follow especially if the supervisor recognizes us for a job well done. If a
supervisor is burned out and just picks on employees on how they do not do things right then
those employees will do the bare minimum to avoid making a mistake or may feel a
disconnect from the job due to no motivation. This is how these leadership characteristics
translate into the overall organizational effectiveness. Employees, especially newer
employees, will be affected for the rest of their carrier if these supervisors are their first. That
is why I think it is so important for leaders within organizations to learn the proper skills to
be leaders and continue to practices these skills and characteristics to maximize their
employees efforts. I would recommend supervisors be evaluated on a more consisted bases to
ensure they are representing the organization in the proper manner and teaching employees
the correct characteristics so that they will be prepared to be in the leadership role one day. I
have to say I have been lucky because the only two supervisors I have had were great. They
both were newly promoted Sgt.’s and all about being proactive which have allowed me to
grow as an officer

institutionalize them. Another example of leadership is keeping the department organized by
making sure the duties are being carried out.
These leadership characteristics translate into overall organizational effectiveness by having
everyone in the organization go through with the function or duty each has to comply with.
Without these characteristics there would be chaos and irresponsible people within the
policing organization. The recommendations I would suggest so that policing organization
