Global Impact and Solutions for Combating Major Crimes in the Justice
System
What is the definition of ‘major crime’? How do major crimes and criminal issues impact the
justice system on a global scale? How can we improve the approach in which we combat
major crimes and criminal issues affecting justice systems and processes?
“Major Crime: Any crime involving death, attempted homicide, serious bodily injury, arson,
major facility disturbance, escape, or attempted escape” (GLOSSARY OF PRISON TERMS,
2012). Major crimes and criminal issues impact the justice system on a global scale because
trafficking is a Major Crime and it happens frequently. People traffic people, drugs, and
weapons in and out of the country. This is a problem because it allows more drugs and access
to illegal weapons in the country. This promotes a problem for security of the country and the
safety of Americans. Women and children are sold for sex in places like Mexico, which is so
close to this country. A current issue that we have is that the American government purposely
smuggled weapons into Mexico to track where they go. They were lost while they were being
tracked and now there are all sorts of weapons all over Mexico. We can improve the
approach in which we combat major crimes by giving a more sever punishment. If a person is
scared of the punishment, they are less likely to commit the crime. This could work all the
way around, people need to be scared of what is going to happen to them if they get caught to
try and deter criminals from committing the crime.

Response 2
Major crimes are those involving homicide, serious bodily injury, most aggravated crimes.
These are only a few examples, as the list is endless. One of the most prevalent 'major crimes'
is terrorist attacks. Such crimes involve an extremely high level of death or injury to others,
and they effect the criminal justice system globally. A terrorist attack impacts the justice
system immensely because when an attack occurs, everything changes. As a result of the
September 11 attacks, the Patriot Act was implemented, homeland security implemented new
policies, and even local agencies implemented new security and training policies.
On a smaller scale, a homicide is considered a major crime. A recent homicide involved the
Cartel and a United States citizen who was killed while on vacation. This type of crime is a
major crime and it impacts the justice system globally as well. When various jurisdictions,
the DEA, and the federal police are all involved in an investigation it's difficult to keep
control of the case.
