• A crime is considered to be any act that breaks the laws of a state or
a country and is considered to be punishable by the same law.
• The prevalence of crime in any society is used to determine the
effectiveness of its law and/or law enforcers. It is also used to
determine the stability of a society in terms of socio-economic
development and improvement.
• It is for this same reason that criminology is founded on. This is the
study of crime and deviant behaviours; their root causes, their
consequences, ways to prevent them and the means to reduce them.
• The FBI are known to be a world renowned bureau that deals with
crime investigation and prevention through proper analysis of crime
and the criminal patterns established over the years. It also works
hand in hand with the public for relevant information.
Introduction

Definition of the crime
• Robbery is defined as the act of forcefully taking someone’s
property and putting the victim in danger or fear. More often than
nor, it involves violence whereby the victim is seriously hurt, injured
and even murdered.
• According the FBI crime analysis lab, 7% of all violent robberies
always lead to death of the victim/s, while 47% of the times the
victim is physically injured. However virtually all robberies have a
negative psychological effect on the victim.
• Armed robbery has been on the rise since 2008, while aggravated
robbery, which involves the use of deadly weapons like bombs, has
risen since 2010.
• The major difference between stealing and robbery, is that the when
the latter is occurring there has to be use of force, fear and violence
as opposed to the former whereby the culprit tries to ensure that the
owner is not aware.

Demographics of the Crime
• According to the FBI crime lab, violent crime in 2008 was
1,382,012 incidences , this was a 1.9% decrease from the year 2007.
Robbery accounted for 36% of these incidences.
• According to Masturd, 2001, gender, race and socioeconomic status
disparities play an important role in determining if an individual will
participate in crimes. 87.9% of all robbery crimes are done by male
individual while majority of them are coloured, either African-American or
Latin- American, from a low income background.
• This plays a role in shaping the sentencing patterns as non white males
always get a harsher sentence as compared to a white female. According
to Albonetti, 1997, 30% of the male culprits arrested for involvement in
robbery get a no prison sentence compared to 65% of women.
• 69.8% of all robbers are either high school drop outs or cleared from high
school but did not get a chance to go college. It is also estimated that 73%
of non white male first time robbers will be involved in a subsequent
robbery as opposed to 52% of while male robbers and 28% of women.
