Trends in Policing: Development, Operations, and the Role of Technology in
Shaping the Future
What are the current trends regarding the development and operation of policing? How does
trending (past, present, and future) affect the ability to plan for development and operational
aspects of policing? How can we improve the reliability of trending analysis to better plan for
the future? Explain.
Current trends regarding the development and operations of policing include more training,
more in-depth evaluations and advance meeting amongst the command staff such as
compstat. Compstat is one of the newer methods of evaluating development and operations of
policing. Compstat is a form of analyzing productivity and effectiveness as a whole unit by
evaluating every department. Within my police agency all of the mayors and compstat
officers from uniform, CID, Specialized units and other divisions meet with the chief or
assistance chiefs. Compstat actually indicates what current trends in policing are working and
which ones are not working. From these meeting current trends will either be given the green
light to continue as future trends or put to a stop, or altercations will be made to it. These
meetings will hold each member of the command staff accountable for their department
which will provide a form of motivation to reach the higher level of excellences. Past, present
and future trends will be developed and analyzed with every compstat meetings and then
those majors will pass the information to the levels of supervision and trickle down to the
officers. From personal experience this form of analyzing has several benefits because
nothing is set in stone since it is constantly evaluated. Within my department a lot of thought
is brought into the equation when making a decision that will effect the department because
of the ‘meeting of the minds” which I think is the right way to go about it since there are
officer from 5 years to 30 years of experience in those meetings.

The current trends in policing are moving into a digital age. With everybody facebooking and
having smartphone's the need for training in this aria has been realized. The training and
operations have also given us things like compstat witch is a program police use to predict
arias of crime helping to form more effective patrol routes.
Policing has gone from the start of policing being just a response to problems if they were
lucky and at this time police did not abide by any standards and were corrupt. We have
moved into arias from hear to community policing and trying to be proactive against crime.
Over years of trying to develop a game plan against crime we are still using community stile
policing with the help of computer programs like compstat to help in this aria.
