Tasks and Procedures Which MAY Involve Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens.

Microorganisms that can cause disease in humans. They may be present without the knowlege of the carrier.

Bloodborne Pathogens

The use of these is required concept of care based upon the assumption that all blood and body fluids, and materials that have come into contact with blood or body fluids, are potentially infectious.

Universal Precautions

Although OSHA does not require that all protective clothing and equipment be used for all tasks, protective clothing and equipment shall be appropriate for the level of risk associated with the task performed.

Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment

Shall be worn for barrier protection against contact with blood or other potentially infectious material. If they are damaged, they should be replaced immediately. Other solied clothing or equipment shall be removed BEFORE the removal of these. These shall be carefully removed to avoid skin contact wtih the exterior of them.

Disposable Latex or Nitril Gloves

May be worn for barrier protection against sprays of bood or other potentially infectious material to the mouth and nose. If soiled, they shall be replaced immediately.

Disposable Face Masks

Shall be worn for barrier protection against sprays of blood or other potentially infectious material to the eyes and vapor protection against exposure to formaldehyde.

Goggles

Shall be worn for barrier protection against sprays of blood or other potentially infectious material to the face.

Face Masks

A washable or disposable long-sleeve gown shall be worn for barrier protection against skin contact with chemicals, blood or other potentially infectious material. If soiled, they should be replaced immediately.

Gowns

Disposable and should be worn for barrier protection against blood or other potentially infectious material.

Head and Shoe Covers

Appropriate protective measures shall be taken during removal. The degree of protection necessary will vary depending upon the circumstances of the removal. Good judgement shall be executed.

The face of the deceased shall be covered with a barrier cloth.

The body shall be handled gently to avoid expulsion of fluids or air.

A barrier mask shall be used if circumstances warrant.

A closed pouch or body bag shall be used if circumstances warrant.

The body shall be secured to the stretcher with safety straps.

Gloves and other protective clothing and equipment used during the removal shall be placed in a container suitable for transporting to avoid unprotected contact until disinfection or final disposal occurs.

Great care shall be taken to eliminate or minimize the expulsion of air and spraying of fluids when positioning the deceased, during embalmng and during other preparation of human remains.

Gloves and other personal protective clothing and equipment used during embalming and other preparation shall be disposed of properly.

A regular cleaning and disinfection schedule shall be established for work areas used for embalming or other preparation of human remains.

Housekeeping

The following measures shall be taken:

Used sharps shall be disposed of in a puncture resistant container designed for this purpose.

Materials prepared for disposal shall be placed in appropriately labeled containers

Medical waste containers shall not be moved from designated locations. Containers shall be placed in locations considered to be secure and removed from casual access by employees and the general public.

Disposal of Medical Waste

Eating, drinking, smoking, handling of contact lenses or the application of cosmetics shall be prohibited in work areas used for embalming or other preparation of human remains.

Hands shall be washed immediately upon the removal of protective clothing and gloves.

Employees with open cuts or lesions shall consult management about necessary protective measures required for tasks to be performed.

Wearing of contaminated protective clothing or equipment outside of work areas designated for embalming or other preparation of human remains shall be prohibited.

When protective clothing or equipment has lost its integrity or been penetrated by blood or other potentially infectious material it shall be removed and the skin shall be washed.

Extraordinary precaution shall be taken to avoid the possibility of a needle stick or other injury caused by sharps.

The Following Additional Safety Precautions Shall be Taken:

To bloodborne Pathogens shall have the Hepatitis B immunization program made available to them at not charge within 10 days of starting work.

Employees who have been vaccinated are not required to be vaccinated again.

All Employess of Occupational Exposure Risk

Shall follow the current guidelines of the US Public Health Services, which may include prescreening, vaccination shots, post-testing to see if immunization has been achieved and booster shots.

Immunization Program

Shall not be required as a condition of employment or as a condition of participation in the immunization program.

Prescreening

Shall be used to document the employer's offer and the employee's response.

Hepatitis B Vaccination Form

A specific eye, mouth, nose, non-intact skin or parenteral (needlestick) contact wtih blood or other potentially infectious material resulting from an employee's duties.

Exposure Incident

Shall make available post-exposure evaluation and follow-up to all employees who have had an exposure incident.

The Employer

The contaminated area shall be immediately washed with water, soap or detergent to remove the contamination without causing further damage.

The incident shall be fully documented.

If possible, source blood shall be serologically tested for HBV and HIV and the results shall be furnished to the employee.

The exposed employee's blood shall be serologically tested for HBV and HIV soon after exposure as possible.

Post-exposure follow-up recommended by the US Public Health Service shall be furnished the employee.

Counseling and medical evaluation of reported suspect illness arising subsequent to the exposure shall be provided.

When an Exposure Incident Occurs:

A copy of OSHA standard

A description of the duties performed at the tie of the exposure incident.

Documentation of the route of entry

The results of the source blood serology test (if available)

The employee's record of vaccination

The Physician Treating and Evaluating an Exposure Incident Shall be Furnished:

Who will furnish a copy of the results to the employee, within 15 working days of the exposure incident.

A Physician Shall Furnish a Copy of the Results of the Completed Evaluation to the Employer

Whether the employee has or should receive the hepatitis B vaccination series

That the employee has been informed of the results of the evaluation

That the employee has been told about any medical conditions resulting from the exposure which require further evaluation or treatment

The Following Information Shall be Included:

The use of appropriate BIOHAZARD warning labels and/or red bags shall be used to identify all materials and receptacles that contain potentially infectious materials.

Labeling

A copy and explanation of bloodborne pathogens and related diseases, including but not limited to, HIV. HBV, hepatitis C, syphillis, and Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease

An explanation of modes of transmission

A copy of this Exposure Control Plan

An explanation of how to recognize tasks subjecting the employee to potential exposure

Information on how to eliminate or minimize exposure risk

An explanation of the use and limitations of personal protective clothing and equipment and safe work practices

Information on the proper selection, use, location, removal, handling, decontamination and disposal of personal protective clothing and equipment

Information concerning the hepatitis B immunization program

An explanation of action to be taken in the event of an exposure incident, including reporting, medical follow-up and post exposure evaluation

An explanation of signs and labels

Traning Shall Include:

Dates of training

Contents or summary of course

Names and job titles of employees receiving the training

names and qualifications of instructors

Traning Records Shall be Maintained and Shall Include:

An employee's hepatitis B vaccination status

A copy of all materials submitted to a physician who has treated and/or evaluated an employee
