Mask Details: As you design your mask, justify your color and design choices. As you choose
your colors ard design elements, keep in mind that you are trying to symbolize evil, hatred,
hunting, savagery, inhumanity, and wildness.
COLOR OR
ELEMENT
SYMBOLIC SIGNIFICANCE RELATION TO LORD OF THE
FLIES
Fire The burning desire to have order, warmth. The
'good side'. The fire symbolizes the flame of
civilization, humanity.
The fire is their symbol of rescue,
in away it symbolizes civilization.
Skull The skull symbolizes the 'neec' for death, blood,
carnage. The bad side'. The skull symbolizes the
death of their human nature, of their consciences.
The skull of the dead parachute
man. misunderstooo as the beast,
viewed as evil.
Shattered Conch The broken conch symbolizes them losing their
law ano order, because the conch symbolizes their
human need for set rules and direction.
The conch is their ultimate picture
of rules and oroer, it's their main
form of attempting to form their
own civilization.
Black Shards 1 made the black shams look as though they were
breaking off the conch, so they were, in a way, a
form of organized evil because of the origins from
the conch. Because spoiler alert*, when they oo
finally break off from the conch and their
systematic society, they have a sort of organized,
but still evil ard chaotic, group, uno er Jack's rules
ard regulations.
The black shards were there to
symbolize the piercing darkness
ano the evil, dark, unknown of the
beast. Especially because the
beast was seen as a black thing
coming for them.
Dripping Black Knife When Jack kills the pig, he gets blood all over him.
ard seems to enjoy it. especially because of how
fervently he speaks of spilling blood. He enjoys
death, and. more importandy, causing blood to fall.
So 1 made his knife, an automatic symbol of evil,
drip with the evil black bloou he spills and thirst
for.
Symbolizing the knife they used to
kill the pig, dripping blooo
everywhere, the black blood
symbolizing the evil thirst for
death the boys have.
Black Cracks Finally, these black cracks in the sides of the skull
show the ur stableness of 'the dark side , as
cheesy as that sounds. Because you can t keep
sure footing when you're balarcec on chaos. It
also shows the boys' cracking sanity, anc the way
they are all slowly losing their minds.
The cracks symbolize their
cracking sanity, black creeping
into their little civilization, causing
the boys to worry about a
nonexistent beasL disrupting their
minds anu their neeu for, in Hack
of a better word, civilization.
