Finding the Volume and Surface Area of a Cube
Learning Outcomes
Find the volume and surface area o f a cube
A cube is a rectangular solid whose length, width, and height are equal. See Volume and Surface Area of a Cube., below. Substituting, s for the
length, width and height into the formulas for volume and surface area o f a rectangular solid, we get:
V = L W H
V = js s s
V = s:1
S = 2 L H + 2 Z i r + 2 W H
S = 2s s + 2s s 4- 2s s
S = 2 s2 + 2s2 + 2s2
S = 6s2
So for a cube, the formulas for volume and surface area are
V = v 5
and
S — 6 s2
Volume and Surface Area of a Cube
For any cube with sides o f length

Volume: V « s3
Surface Area: 5 = 6s2
