Careers in Psychology

In terms of picking a career and hoping to doctoral level college in the wake of accepting
your Bachelor's in psychology there can be numerous choices that it can appear to be overpowering.
The most essential thing is to consider what you like to do and what you feel will keep you the most
intrigued and glad when you proceed with your degree. I trust that having the capacity to pick
something that makes you glad and can keep your advantage is the most imperative component,
while it may not be the simplest decision it is a vital one.
Denise needs to settle on an imperative choice as she chooses what she might want to
proceed with her training and degree with. She has numerous choices as she is exceptionally inspired
by kids and directing however the issues emerges when she is not keen on perusing distributions and
exploration discoveries and not intrigued by leading them. I surmise that three majors that may be an
extraordinary thought and impeccable match for her future: Master in Social Work (MSW),
Pastoral counseling (MA), and counseling (MS). In the case of her getting an MA/ MS in
counseling psychology, she will have the advantage of providing proper suggestions to the
children regarding the activities which are required to be carried out by them (Davey, 2011). If
she carried out her education in counseling psychology then, it is likely that, she will have better
understanding of child and adolescent problems and she will act in a better manner regarding the
solutions. The pros to each of these degrees is that they will still continue her education in
psychology and will continue to educate her on how to counsel children and adolescents as well
as how to treat them. Another pro about each of these majors is that they also do not necessarily
require one to do research that often and she can continue to counsel without having to
constantly research and read publications, which is something she is not interested in. A con to
receiving a degree in pastoral counseling is that she is not only going to be counseling children

but will be counseling adults as well and it is a little less professional counseling in only ministry
settings, so this will be limiting (Jordan & Danielson, 1997). A con to continuing school in social
work and counseling is that she will not have a main focus in children and adolescents again and
will also require research. These types of degrees do not require as much as many other
psychology degrees but you must be up to date with treatments and engage in current knowledge
and education that is out there in the world of psychology. But with each of these having limited
research and still focusing on counseling I feel they will be the best options for her.
In the case of Raul I think that he is overwhelmed because school is nearing a closure and
he has not decided what he wants to do with his life and is already responsible for a family. With
all of these factors in his life I can understand why it may be difficult trying to find a job that he
will love when he already has all the pressure that goes along with real life weighing on him. I
think he is already on a great path when he has discovered that clinical and counseling
psychologist is not what he wants to do before it was too late. I believe that it is best to, in some
way, “shop around” when it comes to a career that you feel will suit you. The best thing you can
do is to look at people who you think have your “perfect” job and see what they did in order to
get there, this can truly help to find out your next move (Landrum, 2012). Another option that
Raul has is to internship in positions or places that he feel he may be looking towards going into,
such as what he had done with clinical and counseling psychologists. Never settle with a career,
my advice is to do what makes you happy, even if that means searching longer than expected.
This opportunity John has been given, even though it has left him laid off, has given him
the opportunity to do something that he is passionate about. Industrial/Organizational
psychology is such a growing demand and is greatly used in many businesses today. I/O
