The narrowed topic for my paper is about how laws are more effective in preventing texting and
driving compared to the use of apps or devices that prevent the in-car use of cellphones.

audience.
My primary audience will consist of the teenagers and the young adults as they are the ones most
likely to text and drive.

My point is that although the use of apps and devices that prevent in-car use of the cellphone is
helpful at preventing drivers from texting and driving, the implementation of strict laws would
still be more effective at curbing such habits.

 In 2012, Texas college student Chance Bothe was texting that he needed to stop texting
because he said that he could die in a car accident (Zafar, 2012).
 Indeed, texting and driving is a growing problem in our country.
 The purpose of this proposal is to identify the measures that would be most effective at
preventing people from texting and driving.
 It is important to establish effective measures for preventing people from texting and
driving because it has caused the loss and destruction of so many lives, especially among
the youth.
 Texting started to become popular in the US in the early 2000s as the various
telecommunications companies provided better packages for their subscribers and
enabled internetwork text messaging (“A brief history of text messaging,” 2014).
 According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (2009), driver error is the main
contributing factor to vehicular accidents.
 Teens are especially at risk because of their perception that texting and driving is less
dangerous than drinking and driving (Copeland, 2010).
 Despite the dangerous effects that texting and driving have, not all states have
implemented laws that ban texting and driving.

 In response, companies have turned to technology for the prevention of texting and
driving incidents (Grobart, 2009).
 As a solution, this paper proposes that the most effective way to prevent people from
texting and driving is to continue developing technologies that would prevent such but at
the same time implementing stricter and more effective laws that would ban texting and
driving.
 This would be an effective solution because while people can’t be expected to turn off
their cellphones while driving, the apps can remind them not to use their cellphone while
driving and at the same time, their fear of getting penalized will further encourage them
to make sure that they don’t text and drive.
What method of organization and development will you use to develop your paragraphs?
 Introduction:
o I will use stories of real-life texting and driving incidents to introduce my topic.
 Body:
o Texting started to become popular in the early 2000s and this has led to the
occurrence of problems with texting and driving.
 This will be supported by evidence on why and how texting can impair a
person’ driving skills. Information will also be provided on the use of laws
and technology for preventing texting and driving incidents.
o To resolve this problem, it is proposed that together with the development of apps
and devices that prevent people from texting and driving, stricter and more
effective laws for preventing such should be implemented.

 This will be supported with details of the proposed solution.
o The main benefit of this solution is that it can provide people with a fun way of
changing their texting and driving habits while also encouraging them not to text
and drive for fear of being penalized.
 This will be supported with details on the advantages and disadvantages of
the apps and devices that prevent in-car use of the cellphone, as well as
the strengths and weaknesses of the laws currently in place.
 Conclusion:
o I will conclude the essay by stating how texting and driving is a dangerous habit
and how both the use of technology and the implementation of more effective
laws can be used to curb this habit.
