World Religions3I recently had the opportunity to learn about a religion I knew little about, Hinduism.I also had the opportunity to interview a friend who practices Hinduism and attend her place ofworship. My visit was a wonderful experience that I would encourage anyone to take advantageof if given the opportunity. Even though some may think that learning about other religionsdecreases the faith they have in their God, everyone should consider learning about otherreligions because it increases compassion and understanding and encourages tolerance ofeveryone's religious beliefs.Hinduism is the oldest and third largest organized religion in the world. (BBC, 2008).Hinduism originated in Pakistan and is the most common religion in India. Approximately 80%of the people in India are Hindu. Hinduism has a very long and complicated history. The historyincludes a blend of ancient legends, customs, and beliefs. These customs and beliefs haveevolved today to create many different creeds.Hindus religious texts are known as the Vedas. Hindus believe Brahman is the creator ofall existence and exists in everything; however, they worship other deities, such as Hanuman,Shiva, Lakshmi, and Ram. They see different aspects of Brahman in each of these. They believethat life is based on karma and reincarnation. They believe one’s reincarnation is based on howthey lived their previous life. These are fairly fundamental beliefs of the Hindu people; however, their viewpoint on certain ethics may differ.According to the Axia text, “Although there is no single founder, devotional tradition, orphilosophy which can be said to define Sanatana Dharma, everyday life is so imbued withspiritually meaningful aspects that spirituality is never far from one’s mind” (Axia, 2008). Someof those aspects include rituals, religious festivals, castes and social duties, fasting, prayer, andreverence paid to trees and rivers.
