Exploring Social Stratification and Mobility: Theories, Influences, and Personal
Perspectives
In your analysis of social stratification and mobility, you discussed various factors such as
gender, education, and social change. Based on your understanding of the structural-functionalist
and social conflict theories, critically evaluate the impact of these factors on social mobility.
Consider real-world examples and provide a detailed comparison of how both theories explain
social stratification. Additionally, discuss how the intersectionality of race, gender, and class
influences power dynamics in society.
Word Count Requirement: 1,500-2,000 words

Part 1
Introduction:
Social mobility for either individuals or group of individuals is shift from one place to another to
fit into the social stratification of either being in one social l class or the other .While moving
from one social strata to another there are many factors that evolve over a period of time .
1.What are some of the factors that affect social mobility? Can these be overcome?
Gender: the roles perceived by the man and woman had undergone a paradigm shift. With
women increasingly being seen to be working, the shift in social strata has happened. This has
led to mobility.
Homes now have husbands and wives both working and supporting dual career. This has resulted
in shifts in social status.
Education: This is another very important aspects of social mobility. There is a positive
correlation between education and the income one gets. Highly qualified and well educated
people are likely to earn more and vice versa. Hence the level of formal education designs the
social mobility of the person.
Social change: physical and mental change is much needed for social mobility. When social
changes happen there is an improvement in the quality of life leading to mobility .
Urbanization and industrialization has shifted the standard of living of the people thereby
enabling mobility.
