The social issue I have chosen affecting the workplace and working environment is Sexual
harassment.
Introduction
“The notion of harassment at workplace demonstrates quite a lot of unpleasant behaviors,
repeatedly with utilization of authority differences and/or with unfair environment.”
Sexual harassment is a sexual differentiation that occurs at workplace. It is sexual
advances, physical or verbal conduct tends to conduct offensive work environment. It happens
when a man whistles a woman or a woman sees from up to down a man when he walks. Person
involved in sexual harassment can be sues under the act of Civil Rights 1964. Sexual harassment
include the followings-
 Sexual assaults
 Undesired sexual gestures
 Unwanted telephone calls
 Sexual teasing, comments
 Sexual jokes or stories
 Kissing sound, etc

In order to prevent sexual harassment at workplace, the key aspect that is needed is the
promotion and development of written laws. Either the laws should be incorporated in the
general workplace harassment policy or it should be implemented as a stand-alone sexual
harassment policy. The laws on sexual harassment should include the following points;
It should clearly state that the organization will under all circumstances ensure that the
working environment being provided to employees is free from sexual harassment and strict
disciplinary action will be taken against the employees who will break the law. It should
demonstrate that the organization will commit to a comprehensive strategy for the elimination of
sexual harassment from the workplace (Basu, 2003).
Under these laws, the organization should aim at creating a working environment which
has no room for sexual harassment and where members of the staff are treated with courtesy,
dignity and respect. Training and awareness raising strategies should be implemented in order to
ensure that all the employees know their responsibilities and rights. All the employees at the
workplace should be treated in a fair, sensitive, confidential and timely manner.
The laws should provide an effective procedure for the complaints based on the
principles that the procedure will be implemented in a fair manner. They should also guarantee
complete protection from any kind of victimization or reprisals. Appropriate standards of
conducts should be promoted at all times in the organization. The behavior that encourages the
breach of the sexual harassment policy should be reported immediately. Employees should be
encouraged to do so (Basu, 2003).
