Alaska The purchase was backed by
the

Seward on the claim that it
would help Russia out as
they had been a Union ally
during the American Civil
War and they required more
money and the US also
needed expansion and a

true that Canada would be
surrounded from the north
and the south if the U.S.
possessed Alaska.
With the hope of selling more
US products, the government
of the United States decided to
increase commercial ties with
China and Japan by risking
losing of accessibility to Asian
trade unless it created more
links to the region.
Alaska was inducted into the
Union in 1959. President
Eisenhower signed the official
declaration, which made the
territory of Alaska the 49th
state. Alaska became the first
new state admitted to the
Union since 1912. Alaskans
elect a governor and a
lieutenant governor to four-
year terms. The governor,
who appoints the heads of all
state departments and many
other officials, is considered
one of the most powerful
governors in the United
