Introduction
Introduction to the Instructor’s Resource Manual
The Atando cabos Instructor’s Resource Manual is intended to help with the organization
of the course and the material presented in the program. Here, the following may be found:
sample syllabi, sample lesson plans, an explanation of the way in which this program integrates
the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, audio scripts for the textbook, audio scripts for the Student
Activities Manual, and transcripts of the 5th edition videos.
Atando cabos is an intermediate program that has been developed to help students move
from the beginner’s level of language learning to the low advanced level as defined by the
ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. Its aim is to help students develop fluency, as well as accuracy,
by internalizing and expanding the vocabulary and grammatical structures learned in a lower
level. To achieve this goal, the program presents different topics of discussion that require
students to think critically and present their ideas in pairs, in a group or to the entire class. The
topics presented in each chapter are the basis for class discussions and the grammatical exercises.
Students are asked to solve problems or carry out tasks while they internalize grammatical
structures and learn about the values and modus vivendi of the Hispanic world. The activities
require students to develop the habit of thinking in the foreign language when they formulate
their own ideas. Throughout the program, they utilize a wide range of language functions while
using the language at their disposal to describe, inform, express an opinion, convince someone,
argue a position, hypothesize about a situation, and other language functions. These appear
throughout the book in cyclical fashion.
The Atando cabos program helps students to progress from communicating in simple
words and sentences to speaking and writing using more complex sentence structures and
paragraphs. Most of the exercises are communicative in nature and require some thinking on the

part of the students. Doing the exercises also requires more than one-word answers. The goal of
each activity is to practice authentic communication, as opposed to simply learning to manipulate
language structures. Many of the activities in the chapter give students opportunities to speak
freely instead of constraining them to the use of a single grammatical structure. This enables
them to express themselves in a creative manner by giving priority to the communication of an
idea, an opinion, a feeling or an emotion, a wish or a hope, over the practice of particular
vocabulary items or grammatical structures. In other words, this is a content-based book, not a
grammar-driven program.
Each chapter is structured around a particular theme that presents a topic from different
angles and relates that particular topic to the Hispanic culture. For example, when talking about
the environment, there is information about the efforts being made to protect the flora and fauna
of Costa Rica as well as the problems of pollution in Mexico City. At the same time, there are
sub-themes discussed in the same chapter, such as green buildings, recycling or the experience of
living in Buenos Aires as seen through the eyes of Borges. A particular student may be more
motivated to talk about one of these topics rather than another. It is hoped that all students will
find something that is of interest to them personally to the point of forgetting that they are using
a second language and are motivated to speak because they feel passionately about the subject.
Cultural information is presented in a feature called Ventana al mundo as well as the
marginal notes called Boletín. The information provided in these segments can be used as a
warm-ups to initiate discussion on a particular subject, or it may be integrated as part of class
discussions, debates, round tables or a student’s presentation.
In summary, the Atando cabos program is a content-based book that integrates language
and culture by providing readings and activities that are student-centered and personalized. It
