What is oxidation-reduction (redox) in chemical reactions? | A transfer of elections between 2 chemical species. Reduction comes from gain of electron, oxidation comes from loss of electron. Combustion, rust, energy formation. |
What is dissolution? | Ions that make up a solid are pulled apart and coated in water. |
What is an acid? | A substance with a pH less than 7 that transfers a proton to another molecule. |
What is a base? | A substance with a pH more than 7 that accepts a proton from another molecule. |
What are the products of an acid-base reaction? | Salt and water. |
What factors influence the rate of a reaction? | Concentrations, temperature, pressure, pH, and the presence of a catalyst. |
What is an endothermic reaction? | A reaction that absorbs heat, causing the reaction rate to increase as temperature rises. |
What is an exothermic reaction? | A reaction that releases heat, causing the reaction rate to slow as temperature rises. |
