Metals like gold are found as pure metals rather than ores in the earth because they are…

Unreactive

What form must a substance be in, in order to be electrolysed?

Molten

Negative electrode is called?

Cathode

Positive electrode is called?

Anode

If MgO2 is being electrolysed, would it be Mg or O that goes to the Cathode?

Mg because it is a positive ion and opposites attract

If MgO2 is being electrolysed, which ion goes to the cathode?
Mg goes to the cathode because it is a positive ion and opposites attract.

What is oxidation?

Loss of electrons

What is reduction?

Gain of electrons (electrons are negatively charged so I gain of them is technically reduction!)

Which process is cheaper? Recycling or extraction?

Recycling

What is electroplating?

Coat an object with a thin layer of (another) metal

What is electrolysis powered by?

Electricity

What is the electrolysis of brine?

The electrolysis of brine is a large-scale process used to manufacture chlorine from salt

Why is the extraction of aluminium expensive

Mostly because of the amount of electricity used

Which electrode does the aluminium metal form at

The negative electrode

What is aluminium ore called?

Bauxite

How is the aluminium oxide prepared for electrolysis

the aluminium oxide must be melted so that electricity can pass through it

What Is the definition of electrolysis?

The process of electrolysis is using an electric current to make a chemical change and make new chemicals

What are the environmental impacts of the electrolysis of brine?

It uses a lot of electricity that is mainly produced by the burning of fossil fuels. During electrolysis, metal must be in contact with the solution of brine. A metal commonly used is mercury which is toxic, some mercury escapes into the solution and into the environment.
