The capacity of the product-oriented and process-oriented layouts is determined byanalyzing the capacity of individual departments. (Vonderembse & White, 2013, ch 7.3). Sincethe systems are dependent on each other, the end product of one system becomes the beginningof another. The problem is that if one system is too small and disrupts the flow, it restrictsproduct flow. As (Vonderembse. & White, 2013)point out “this restriction is called a bottleneck,and it determines the system's capacity”(ch 7.3). In our example, step 2 will cannot handle theoutput of step 1, the system capacity, and is the bottle neck department.`How much slack (unused capacity) is available in other departments?Department 1 can deliver 200 units per hour (uph) to department 2, which can only use 175uph, so department 1 cannot be the bottleneck. Departments 2 and 3 combine their inputs to 4 ina ratio of two to one. If dept. 2 has only has 175 to offer, then only 125 uph of 3 can be used. Sofar, department 2 restricts the capacity. To department 4 will flow 300 (175 from dept. 2 plus125 from dept. 3). Department 4 has sufficient capacity to process. Dept 5 can only process 200
