Week 2 DQ1
Attitude and Behavior
Reflect on the relationship between personal attitudes and resulting behaviors, using the Theory
of Planned Behavior, Cognitive Dissonance Theory, and Self-Perception Theory as your
references. If someone has a negative attitude toward a particular individual or group, for
example, what are the potential implications of their behavior toward that individual or group?
How do implicit and explicit attitudes differ?
Go to the Project Implicit website and take the Implicit Association Test
(https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/). Choose any test within the demonstration category.
After retrieving the results of your test, share them with your classmates and consider their
accuracy. Were you surprised by your results? Do they accurately portray your attitude toward
the group? Do you think these types of tests are reliable in measuring prejudice? Please explain
your answer.
When reflecting on the relationship between personal attitudes and resulting behaviors
using the Theory of Planned Behavior, according to theory if we want to predict a behavior or
an intention to do a behavior we need to know three things: attitude toward that behavior,
subjective norms related to that behavior, and perceived behavioral control. Subjective norms
involve one's belief of how people in that person's environment view the behavior. (Feenstra,
2011) When reflecting on the relationship between personal attitudes and resulting behaviors
using Cognitive Dissonance Theory which differs from Theory of Planned Behavior in the sense
that a gap between attitudes or between attitudes and actions that creates tension or
dissonance. We often change our attitudes when faced with a high level of dissonance.
(Feenstra, 2011) When reflecting on the relationship between personal attitudes and resulting
behaviors using Self-perception theory, which is the ability to figure out our attitudes by looking
at our behaviors, we find all three theories used frequently socially and clinically, however in
my opinion the Cognitive Dissonance theory is one that is used more in research and studies
and the other two are more frequently used socially.
When a person has a negative attitude toward a particular individual or group, this can
strongly influence his attitude and behavior they will have towards them in the sense of
