BCOM 230 Week 4 DQ 1: Effective Communication Strategies for
Accountants in Providing Information
BCOM 230 Week 4 DQ 1
As an accountant, how might you ensure you are providing your audience with the
appropriate amount of information in the most appropriate ways?
As an accountant, I would take the following steps to ensure that the audience will
have the appropriate amount of information:
• Know my audience.
• Know the purpose of the communiqué to achieve the communication goal.
• Determine how much information the audience knows or does not know.
• Determine the items of information the message will contain.
• Give each item the emphasis it deserves. Types of emphasis:
o position
o space
o structure
o mechanical devices
I would use the three main stages of the writing process: planning, drafting, and
revising. Although, all parts are important in the writing process, I believe planning
is the most important. Planning consists of three general activities: gathering and
collecting information, analyzing and organizing information, and choosing the
form, channel, and format for the message.
A business report is an orderly and objective communication of factual information
that serves a business purpose.
Reports are a type of information that is factual and serves as a business purpose. I
would take the same steps as stated above plus addition steps for report writing. In
a report, I would have to determine whether I choose a short report or a long report
depending on who my audience is. There are different types of reports available.
