FIVE FUNCTIONS2The Five Functions of Effective Management : Their Applications in BusinessIn 2012, Carl's Jr. reported a total revenue of $1.3 billion in sales (CKE, 2012). The QSRmagazine (2010) ranks Carl's Jr. at number 23 in 2010, with its predominant sales being ofburgers. Carl's Jr's charbroiled hamburgers are a family favorite in the United States, and theirpricing is very reasonable when taken in conjunction with the size of their products. Without thecareful use of the five functions of effective management (planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling), Carl's Jr. would not keep up with changing consumer trends at their individualstores.Working for Carl's Jr. is a very rewarding experience; employees are encouraged to treattheir customers as members of the family, employee-manager relations are very cordial, and themanagement team is very firm, yet approachable, when matters of discipline or customer serviceimprovements are the topic at team meetings. While tips are frowned on in the fast foodcategory, employees are allowed to accept them when offered, but never allowed to solicit tips.Carl's Jr. is always innovating, such as their new 'All-Natural Burger,' a fast food first, inthat the beef is grass-fed and free-range, with no added hormones, steroids, or antibiotics. Theyare keeping with the current 'healthy' trend, and thus they keep ahead of their competitors, successfully attracting the hipster and/or vegan/vegetarian customers. Carl's Jr. has excellentplanning systems and organizational standards, as well as having the ability to closely watchsocial trends and economic changes through the use of social media, such as Facebook, Twitter,Instagram, etc.Social trends affect fads and fashions, which result in new opportunities to sellproducts. Economic conditions shift purchasing habits. A growing orhealthy economy often leads to increased sales by individual companies.
