To support the corporate initiative, the company will focus its attention on severalactivities that support the outlined three areas of focus. The elimination of standby power willhelp reduce our energy use and the installation of solar panels will support the company initiativeto use more renewable energy. Reducing the use of shrink wrap within the organization andrecycling used shrink wrap are activities which support the corporate initiative to reduce plasticuse and waste. Each initiative and actionable item must be cost effective. The return on investment foreach activity must be within the guidelines set by Riordan management. The work of individualemployees is going to dictate the success of each initiative. Riordan will provide training andsupport for each affected employee to help them meet company goals. Riordan hopes byinvolving all stakeholders affected by the plan, providing support to each employee, andmodifying the plan where needed, it will be successful in its approach to a sustainableenvironment. Moreover, regenerating air quality, and improving energy conservation are the keyfactors to focus on. EMS Implementation4Description of Each Non-sustainable Practice at Each PlantWhen examining the presence of the non-sustainability practices at the various RiordanPlants, recycling of plastics is the first business practice identified as an area of change.Recycling of plastics occurs at the Georgia, Michigan and China plants in the departments ofmolding and trimming. During the molding process scrap plastic, off spec-products and purgematerial are collected and reused. This is caused by the outputs of scrap plastic or flashingmanaged as waste andplastic material used to purge the equipment before a color change andmanaged as solid waste. The Michigan molding department makes custom molds where theexcess plastic attached to the part is then trimmed with a mechanical shear. The difference forthis plant is that scrap plastic, off-spec product, and purge material are collected and thrownaway. In China the molding department produces plastic fan blades which are then sent to thetrimming department. While the outputs are the same as Georgia and Michigan, Riordan’sChinese partners handle the recycling of plastics process.Reducing hazardous waste is another area identified for change for all three plants. Thedivisions of Georgia, Michigan and China deals with the practice of hazardous wastemanagement in the departments of molding, trimming, labeling, packaging, and the shippingdepartment. Michigan has additional areas of hazardous waste management which includes themixing and assembly departments. All departments for the three Riordan plants deals withoutputs ofspent cleaners and mold release agents that may create air pollution from volatileorganic compound emissions and managed as hazardous waste along with used oils managed asindustrial waste and spent cleaners and mold release agents managed as hazardous waste. Thesustainability process in place for Georgia and Michigan is to have the used oils collected by a
