Week Seven Homework Exercise: Understanding Inferential Statistics and
Statistical Errors in Behavioral Research
Week Seven Homework Exercise
Answer the following questions, covering material from Ch. 13 of Methods in Behavioral
Research:
1. Define inferential statistics and how researchers use inferential statistics to draw
conclusions from sample data.
Inferential statistics is best defined as a kind of statistics that is most ideally used to determine
whether or not researchers can formulate statements stating that the study results are the
reflection of the occurrence of conducting the experiment for a number of times involving
multiple samples (Cozby, 2009). The researchers of the study make use of inferential statistics
to draw conclusions from a predetermined sample through the identification of the presence of
equivalence, probability of error and research design.
2. Define probability and discuss how it relates to the concept of statistical significance.
The possibility or the chance of the occurrence of something best describes probability. This is
further related to the concept of statistical significance, for the fact that it is used to point out the
likelihood or the possibility of the occurrence of an event provided that there is no modification
in the given population.
