ABOUT THE AUTHORS
BARBARA J. IRWIN, MSN, RN
Barbara Irwin is emeritus Executive Director of Nursing at Kaplan Test
Prep. She supervised development of the Kaplan courses for preparation
for the NCLEX-RN® and NCLEX-PN® exams for U.S. nursing students and
international nurses, as well as integrated testing programs implemented
by nursing schools. Irwin developed the Decision Tree, a framework of
innovative test-taking strategies that help students achieve success on
these high-stakes tests. Her seminars about how to effectively study to
achieve deep learning have guided thousands of students nurses. Her
seminars to nursing faculty have shared important insights about the
NCLEX-RN® and NCLEX-PN® examinations and how to overcome the
challenge of non-self-efficacious nursing students. Irwin received a
bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Oklahoma and a
master of science degree in nursing and nursing education from Kaplan
University. Her professional background includes experience as a nursing
educator and director of a home health agency.
PATRICIA A. YOCK, BSN, RN
Patricia Yock is a nursing educator and consultant in Boulder, Colorado.
She received a bachelor of science in nursing from Loyola University in
Chicago. Her professional experience includes clinical nursing in varied
settings from postsurgical care to comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation,
and nursing education in diploma and practical nursing programs. Yock is
certified in rehabilitation nursing and served as the nursing director for

STEP 3: Read and Complete Parts 1 and 2
The chapters in Parts 1 and 2 of this book contain a comprehensive,
detailed strategy guide for each type of question on the NCLEX-PN® exam.
This information will teach you how to analyze each question and use your
nursing knowledge to select the correct answer choice. Plus, each chapter
in Part 2 ends with practice questions and detailed answer explanations,
designed to help you master NCLEX-PN® exam questions.
STEP 4: Read Part 3
Part 3 will help you determine the most effective methods of exam
preparation for you and will guide you in the licensure process.
Chapter 12, Essentials for International Nurses, contains information on
certification for graduates of foreign nursing schools, work visas, and
programs that can help you prepare for the NCLEX-PN® exam. This chapter
also covers nursing practice in the United States and includes practice

STEP 5: Take the Practice Tests
Kaplan has prepared two different practice tests for you: the book-
included test in Part 4 and the computer-based practice test provided in
your online center. You may benefit from taking the computer-based
practice test first. When the test is completed, you will receive immediate
feedback on your performance, as the software analyzes your strengths
and weaknesses in various content areas. You can then review the areas in
which your performance was weak before you tackle the book-included
test.
STEP 6: Register for the Exam
When you are prepared to take the NCLEX-PN® exam, contact the Board of
Nursing in the state or province where you intend to work as a nurse to
initiate the registration process. All the steps you’ll need to follow are
contained in Chapter 10, The Licensure Process.

SIGN UP FOR AN ONLINE CLASSROOM
EVENT
Kaplan’s NCLEX-PN® online classroom sessions are interactive, instructor-
led NCLEX-PN® prep lessons that you can participate in from anywhere you
can access the Internet.
The online sessions are held in a state-of-the-art virtual classroom—actual
lessons in real time, just like an in-person experience. Interact with your
teacher and other classmates using audio, instant chat, whiteboard,
polling, and screen-sharing functionality. And as in a Kaplan Nursing
course held in person, an NCLEX-PN® online classroom session is led by an
experienced Kaplan instructor.
To register for your NCLEX-PN® online classroom session:

Resources,” select “NCLEX-PN Prep Plus,” and click on “Launch Course”
to open your Course Syllabus.

There,” and scroll down to see the dates and times of upcoming NCLEX-

Select a date for your live classroom event by clicking “Sign Up,” then
follow the registration instructions. You will receive a confirmation

confirm access. You may be prompted to install the Adobe Connect
desktop application.
