a. Scope/purpose of presentation
1) Justification of business continuity plan
A large number of catastrophic events in the last decade have demonstrated the alarming
vulnerability of the U.S. and other nations around the globe to terrorist activity and natural
disasters. Regardless of the predictability of these events, it is imperative in these days to
establish emergency preparedness and response programs to minimize or eliminate the negative
impact that business disruption may cause. The following set of guidelines is a work in progress
and is presented to provide standard procedures to maintain business continuity during Crisis,
Emergencies and or Disaster that may negatively affect our normal operation. It is envisioned as
a beginning, to establish a foundation from which to build and continuously improve a formal
Business Continuity Plan (BCP) that will be focused in the safety and security of our employees,
prevent infrastructure damages and maintain business continuity while minimizing the impact on
our clients, suppliers, partners and/or consultants. Additionally, these guidelines shall provide
preventive procedures along with the basic standard procedures for returning to normal
operations following business disruption of any nature.
Disaster recovery has always been associated with a company’s information technology systems
mainly the servers, switches and data storage devices. The livelihood of any company is its data
and the need for redundancy, whether inside the same building or at a remote site. The recession
that has hit us for the last 10 years caused many corporations and small business to have had to
eliminate the redundancies that were provided for their data storage because the cost of
maintaining them was cutting into profits. Threats other than a company’s network can cripple
the company’s goodwill, reputation and the ability to deliver their products to the customer, meet
market expectation and customers’ demands. Continuity planning needs to meet the needs of
today’s business, their customers and the entire organization. Business continuity will encompass
the customers’ expectations, the views and process of what the customer expectsregardless of
dollar value and the critical operations which the company must protect. The protection that is
implemented will include mitigation throughthe development of a contingency plan, disaster
recovery,risk financing activities,and risk control services.
a) Project management and initiation is essential for a company if it plans on
surviving a disaster, the first thing that needs to happen is to conduct a risk
analysis to establish a need for business continuity. Establish a Business
Continuity Coordinator (BCC) who will ensure business departments understand
the continuity process; provide solutions once risks are identified and help
minimize risks. If an incident occurs the BCC will be responsible for the recovery
of business and critical functions. A work plan will need to be developed that will
