Modern businesses use information as a crucial commodity internally and in dealing with
partners and customers. This information must be safeguarded against disasters, regardless of
cause or origin. To effectively accomplish this, organizations rely on business continuity plans.
Business continuity plans are part of the risk management process and identify vulnerabilities
and weaknesses (threats), control measures against those threats, and appropriate disaster
response and recovery planning. Using the virtual organization Riordan Manufacturing as a case
study, Learning Team A will present a business continuity plan for potential threats to the
Riordan information network.
Riordan Manufacturing employs 550 people across three locations in the continental
United States and one overseas joint venture in Hangzhou, China. Furthermore, Riordan has a
recognized status as a global plastic manufacturer with $46 million annual earning. All of these
accolades are company commodities to be protected. The company’s main products are in
plastic beverage containers produced at its plants in Albany, Georgia; and custom plastic
products produced at its plant in Pontiac, Michigan. The joint venture at Hangzhou produces and
distributes plastic fan parts. Riordan Manufacturing’s research and development is placed at the
corporate headquarters In San Jose. Their main customers are aircraft manufacturers, the
Department of Defense, automotive parts manufacturers, and appliance manufacturers.
BCP Overview
A large number of catastrophic events in the last decade have demonstrated the alarming
vulnerability of the U.S. and other nations around the globe to terrorist activity and natural
disasters. While the predictability of these events varies from one situation to another, it is
imperative for organizations of all sizes to establish emergency preparedness and response

programs that minimize or eliminate the negative impact that these disruptions may potentially
cause. The following set of guidelines forms a business continuity plan specific to Riordan
Manufacturing and is presented to provide standard operating procedures that maintain business
continuity during crises, emergencies, or disaster that negatively affect Riordan’s normal
operations. From this foundation, Riordan can continuously improve a formal Business
Continuity Plan (BCP) that:focuseson the safety and security of Riordan’s employees; prevents
infrastructure damages; and maintains business continuity. Simultaneously, the BCP achieves
these objectives while minimizing the impact on Riordan’s clients, suppliers, partners and/or
consultants. Additionally, these guidelines provide preventive procedures along with the basic
standard procedures for returning to normal operations following business disruption of any
nature.
Justification
Disaster recovery has always been associated with a company’s information technology
systems. This commonly includes servers, switches and data storage devices. As previously
mentioned, data is a commodity for business.The necessityof redundancy - whether inside the
same building or at a remote site – is self-evident in the fact that “putting all the eggs in one
basket” rarely works out. The economic recession that has affected the globe for the last 10 years
caused many corporations and small business to eliminate the redundancies that were provided
for their data storage; the cost of maintaining these redundanciesnegatively affected too many
profits. Threats outside a company’s network can cripple the company’s goodwill, reputation and
the ability to deliver their products to the customer, meet market expectation and customer
demands. Continuity planning must meet the requirements of modern and future businesses, their
customers and the entire organization.This entails a plan concrete enough to be employed now,
