PSY 270 Clinical Assessment
What other information would you like to learn during the interview with the family?
What questions would you ask?
Clara was adopted by the Lawson’s, which means that her genetic makeup differs from that of
Mr. and Mrs. Lawson. Since Clara’s condition could be due to a genetic predisposition I would
need to find out information about Clara’s biological mother and father and whether or not they
suffered from any psychological abnormalities or disorders. It would also be beneficial to ask at
what age Clara was adopted by the Lawson’s. I would also need to know whether or not the
Lawson’s had any existing issues within their relationship (are they arguing in front of Clara?)
because such behavior can also impact Clara’s behavior.
If Clara was not adopted at birth it would be helpful to know about her experiences prior to
being adopted by the Lawson’s because her current behavior could be a result of her past
experiences (prior to adoption). Since Clara has only recently developed severe temper tantrums
it would also be relevant to find out if there have been any traumatic events or changes in Clara’s
life that could possibly be responsible for the changes in her behavior.
In addition to the clinical interview, what other clinical assessment tools should you
consider? Why?
Since Clara is so young clinical assessments are somewhat limited. One type of clinical
assessment tool that I would consider in Clara’s case would be projective tests, particularly the
Rorschach test and drawings (Comer, 2005, p. 72). Clara might find it difficult to explain
exactly who she is and how she feels about things, so doing projective tests would help give me a
better idea of these aspects. While projective tests are not completely reliable in all cases I do
believe that in Clara’s case it would help give me some insight into Clara’s world.
