PSY 305 Assignment 1
1. A professor has been teaching statistics for many years. His records show that the
overall mean for final exam scores is 85 with a standard deviation of 10. He believes that
this year’s class is superb to the previous classes. The mean for the 40 students is 90.
a. What is the null hypothesis?
There is no significant difference between the classes and any obtained difference is
a result of chance occurrence due to sampling error.
b. What is the research hypothesis?
The professor believes that this year’s class is superior to his previous ones.
c. Is this a one or two tailed hypothesis?
Two tailed hypothesis or Non directional
d. Which test should you use? Why?
Z-test for single samples because it is used to compare the sample mean and the
population mean and check if there is a significant difference and if the parameters
of the null-hypothesis population are known
e. Calculate the appropriate statistical test.
Population mean (μ) = 85
