How do the ethical codes of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the National
Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) guide professionals in providing
effective and culturally sensitive care? In your response, explain how the principles of non-maleficence,
beneficence, and confidentiality play a role in substance abuse counseling and the counselor-client
relationship.

Substance abuse can be defined as excess dependence or overindulgence on substance which leads to
addiction. The body becomes so conditional on the drug or the substance that once you try to stop using
withdrawal symptoms shows up. It is very harmful for one’s health. The uncontrolled use of such
substances leads to dependence syndrome and frantic behavior. People abuse substance because they
may be experiencing feeling of loneliness, personal problem, depression, stress and strain in life, and
many other problems as such. Amongst the younger generation, what starts as a fun because of peer
pressure generates into addiction.

Kinds of substance abuse:

There are numerous substances which are addictive in nature and tend to be abused more. The following
are some kinds of substance abuses:

1) Alcohol abuse: It is considered to be the oldest and most widely used abusive substance. It has a
negative effect on all organs of the body. The over indulgence in drinking can cause problems such as
aggressive behavior, impaired judgement, anxiety, depression,sexual dysfunction, mood problems and
many other health issues. Alcohol abuse is different from alcoholism .Alcoholism is a higher form of
alcohol abuse and it is like a disease.

2) Stimulant abuse: It includes legal substance such as caffeine, nicotine and other over the counter
stimulants and illegal drugs such as methamphetamine and cocoaine.The use of such substances
stimulate pleasure. The excess of usage of these substances exhaust energy and there is an intense
craving causing withdrawal symptoms. It is easy and quick to develop such addiction.

3) Depressant abuse: These include substances which slow down the normal functioning of the brain or
the central nervous system. . Barbiturates like Seconal, Amytal, Nembutal, and phenobarbital) are used
as anesthesia or for the treatment of seizures. Benzodiazepines like Xanax, Valium, and Rohypno are
used as a good treatment for anxiety and sleep disorders. Opiates such as heroin, opium and morphine.
Some of these substances are legal and used for medical purposes. But regular use of these drugs can
cause addiction and creates psychological and physical dependence .Usage of these drugs along with
alcohol can be lethal.

4) Psychedelic Abuse: These are psychoactive drug which causes hallucination, distorts perception and
awareness. Substance such as LSD, mescaline, psilocybin mushrooms, DMT falls under this category.
It is dangerous for people with mental health issues to abuse these substances. The degree of the
destruction that can be caused by usage of some of these substances has not been well researched. The
abuse of LSD harm judgment and reasoning .Sometimes even a low dosage can cause serious injury and
death .It also causes acute anxiety reactions.

5)Marijuana Abuse: It is a plant(scientific name :Cannabis sativa) whose leaves, seeds, stems, and
roots are consumed for the purpose of feeling intoxicated .It is known to be the most commonly illegal
drug that is abused round the world. In United States some states has legalized medical marijuana.
Consumption of marijuana stimulates ecstasy, physical relaxation, impaired memory distorted
perception etc. Users of more powerful marijuana may cause giddiness and hallucinations. The long-
