Introduction
Psychology is a wide-ranging field that is divided into some branches of study. In psychological
specialty clinical psychology provides complete and continuing behavioral and mental health
care for people and their families; consultation to communities and agencies; education, well
training, and care, and research-based practice (McCrae R R & Costa P T, 1999). The main aim
of clinical psychologists lessen the distress and develop the psychological happiness of clients.
They use psychological research and methods to make constructive changes to their clients' lives
and offer several forms of treatment (McCrae R R & Costa P T, 1999). This research paper
shows an examination of clinical psychology. This specific examination will include the history
and evolving nature of clinical psychology, the important role of research and statistics, and the
main differences between clinical psychology and other mental health professions.
History of Clinical Psychology
In 1982 the field of clinical psychology was born with the American Psychological Association
(APA) being founded. The first psychological clinic being opened at the University of
Pennsylvania in the year 1896. For a valuable reason i.e human illness, Lightner Witmer opened
this clinic and provided the good facility to apply psychological philosophy to human (McCrae R
R & Costa P T, 1999). Many colleagues of Witmer’s did not like the plan of using the
psychological science on real clinical difficulties. Even at that time Witmer’s ideas and thoughts
were not well received, but he was still able to provide such useful programs and open the clinic
for children those who under pressure with school-related issues (Ryan R M & Deci E L, 2001).
