Tn-C1a.ss Activity: Dialysis ___
Scenario:
You are a registered nurse at the local dialysis clinic caring for a new patient. They have a
temporary right internal jugular vein hemodialysis catheter and is scheduled to have an
arteriovenous (AV) fistula placed within 1 week. You access the dialysis catheter and perform
their first treatment without any complications. However, the patient has some questions.
Directions:
Using your med/surg book starting on page 1383 or the National Kidney Foundation
(www.kidney.org) website complete the questions below. Always try to explain complex
processes in easy-to-understand language. Once complete, save and upload this activity into
the dialysis in-class activity assignment area.
1. Patient Question: "I'm not quite sure I completely understand hemodialysis. Can you explain what it
is and how it works?"
Hemodialysis filters waste and extra fluid from the blood using a machine called dialyzer. It is used to
treat advanced kidney failure. It can help control your blood pressure, balance minerals like
potassium, sodium and calcium. This can be done in a hospital or at home for three sessions a week
lasting about four hours.
2. Patient Question: "Can you please create a sample 2-day meal plan that includes breakfast, lunch,
and dinner?"
*Make sure to include foods the patient should avoid.
