US Construction Industry “Its Return to Glory”
During the late part of the 1950’s the United States construction industry had begun to
revitalize itself. The country was given a gift by its President Dwight D. Eisenhower in the form
of legislation which would produce more jobs for the nation than it had seen after the Great
Depression. President D. Eisenhower signed into law the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956.
According to the Department of Transportation (2014) the Interstate System has been a part of
our cultureas construction projects, as transportation in our daily lives, and as an integral part
of the American way of life” (para 1).
Political Nature of Construction
Construction is a volatile industry that is sensitive to economic short comings, which can
come from inflation and poor financial decision that are brought on from the public. During the
early 2000’s; shortly after the bombing of the New York Twin Towers; our country entered into
a war with Iraq. As the country was at war our government was busy promoting businesses to
hire workers, which in turn promoted growth in other industries because now more people were
at work and were able create discretionary income for within there households. This allowed
consumers such as me to have a little more buying power. Also credit was easier to come by;
therefore people began to invest in the “American Dream by purchasing homes. The sub-
industry of construction is the Housing Industry. When the housing industry demand increased
so did construction jobs. Homes were being constructed everywhere and at an astounding rate
even older apartments were being converted into condo style homes. According to Fernández-
Solís (2008) The most critical decisions by stakeholders are affected by the disposition or
attitude towards what eventually becomes the project's driving principle -cost, value or quality -
