The success of any organization depends on various factors such as its ability to relate
favorably with its clients, the quality of its services and its response to competition. However, all
these are dependent on the capabilities, skills and management prowess of the human resources.
Through them, firms are able to implement all their key strategies in the most effective manner,
which enables them to achieve favorable competitiveness in the industries of operation. Google
Inc. is one such company that has mastered the art of leveraging the inputs of its human
resources in the direction of goals and objectives accomplishment. This paper examines the
company’s human resource management approaches right from its employee selection,
compensation, use of technology and relationship with the labor markets.
Company history
Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google Company, headquartered in Santa Clara,
California, in 1996. The idea to form the firm emanated from the project they were working on
jointly while still in college. The choice of the name, Google, which is a representation of the
numeral 1 succeeded by 100 zeroes, was a symbolic representation of the algorithmic nature of
its search engine operations. The company’s actual growth took off in the period after 1998 when
it was incorporated. Some key developments in its history include the launch of the Google
toolbar, mentalplex, and ad words in the year 2000. Each of these tools contributed immensely in
revolutionizing how the company interacted with its clientele in the years that would follow. The
mentalplex and the toolbar were targeted at the search engine customers, whereby the former is
visualization software that enables users to get to their search results easily by offering
suggestions. The latter allows the users to use Google search services without necessarily visiting
the company’s web homepage. Ad words was an innovation targeting advertisers with the aim of
