Chapter 1 0 Homework Problems1 . List some similarities and differences between the FITNESSGRAM and the President's Challengefitness tests.- Some similarities between the FITNESSGRAM and the Presidents Challengefitness tests are that they are both used to measure aerobic fitness and they both include a lotof running. Some differences between the two is that the President s Challenge fitness test is aself-administered test whereas the FITNESSGRAM test is administered by a coach.2. Describe the two physical activity assessment techniques used in the FITNESSGRAM. -Thetwophysical activity assessment techniques used in the FITNESSCRAM is the pacer test whichmeasures V02max and aerobic capacity. It also includes skinfold measuring which measuresbody composition based on someone's weight and height.3. You are an elementary school teacher. Your principal has asked you to test the student body forcardiorespiratory endurance and report the results of the test to him or her. What are some stepswould youtaketo testthestudents and prepareyourreport?-I would personally use theFITNESSGRAM test because it is the most common test used in Texas. I would split the classup based on what grade they are in and then record all the results for the students. To make iteasier on myself I could assign the children a number so it will be easier to record their resultsaccurately.4.What are the four awards available under the President's Challenge testing program? Whichawards scheme would you use andwhy?-The four awards available under the President'schallenge testing program are pins and magnets, presidential emblems, participantcertificated, and health fitness award emblems. I would award students based on participationwhich would increase the amount of participation in the test. I would do this so that studentsfeel they should try on the test to hopefully achieve something valuable to them like an extra20 minutes of play time.5. Which physical fitness test would you use? Why? -I would use the FITNESSGRAM pacer testbecause it's the same physical fitness test that I did when I was younger. It is more widelyused and accepted so therefore I would choose this one since it seems to have accurateresults.6. Differentiate between the items on health-related and motor fitness tests. -A difference betweenthe items on health-related and motor fitness tests is that the health-related fitness tests aremore based on fitness outcomes whereas the motor fitness test is more based on theperformance of the participants.7. What type of evaluation is used with the FITNESSGRAM? -TheFITNESSGRAMtests usesacriterion-referenced form of evaluation, and it is also formative and summative.8. Is physical activityorphysical fitnessmorevalidly measured? Why?-Physical fitness is morevalidly measured because it is actually tested in person. The participant must do the exercisein order to complete the physical activity whereas physical activity is often tested via surveyswhere participants can lie or exaggerate how much physical activity they have.Chapter 10 Mastery Items1 . Were you given physical fitness tests during your youth? What tests did you take? What items didyou complete? Did the test results provide a reliable and valid estimate of your physical fitness? - Yeswhen I was younger we always did the FITNESSGRAM test. We would do the running portionof it and we also got tested for the amount of pushups and sit-ups we could do. I believe thatthe results were reliable and a valid estimate of my physical fitness because I was often in thetop percentile in my class. I have always been extremely physically fit.2. How would you describethestatus of physical fitness of American youth?- I would describe thestatus of physical fitness of the American youth today as extremely poor. Physical educationis not as important to schools or students as it used to be. I remember P.E. was a huge dealback in my day and we would be punished for not participating but in today s society P.E. isoften looked at as a non-important class when it shouldn t be. We wonder why there is anincrease in Type II diabetes but at the same time we disregard the importance of physicalfitness and how it can affect us long term.
