Chapter 1 0 Homework Problems
1 . List some similarities and differences between the FITNESSGRAM and the President's Challenge
fitness tests. - Some similarities between the FITNESSGRAM and the Presidents Challenge
fitness tests are that they are both used to measure aerobic fitness and they both include a lot
of running. Some differences between the two is that the President s Challenge fitness test is a
self-administered test whereas the FITNESSGRAM test is administered by a coach.
2. Describe the two physical activity assessment techniques used in the FITNESSGRAM. -The two
physical activity assessment techniques used in the FITNESSCRAM is the pacer test which
measures V02max and aerobic capacity. It also includes skinfold measuring which measures
body composition based on someone's weight and height.
3. You are an elementary school teacher. Your principal has asked you to test the student body for
cardiorespiratory endurance and report the results of the test to him or her. What are some steps
would you take to test the students and prepare your report? -I would personally use the
FITNESSGRAM test because it is the most common test used in Texas. I would split the class
up based on what grade they are in and then record all the results for the students. To make it
easier on myself I could assign the children a number so it will be easier to record their results
accurately.
4. What are the four awards available under the President's Challenge testing program? Which
awards scheme would you use and why? -The four awards available under the President's
challenge testing program are pins and magnets, presidential emblems, participant
certificated, and health fitness award emblems. I would award students based on participation
which would increase the amount of participation in the test. I would do this so that students
feel they should try on the test to hopefully achieve something valuable to them like an extra
20 minutes of play time.
5. Which physical fitness test would you use? Why? -I would use the FITNESSGRAM pacer test
because it's the same physical fitness test that I did when I was younger. It is more widely
used and accepted so therefore I would choose this one since it seems to have accurate
results.
6. Differentiate between the items on health-related and motor fitness tests. -A difference between
the items on health-related and motor fitness tests is that the health-related fitness tests are
more based on fitness outcomes whereas the motor fitness test is more based on the
performance of the participants.
7. What type of evaluation is used with the FITNESSGRAM? -The FITNESSGRAM tests uses a
criterion-referenced form of evaluation, and it is also formative and summative.
8. Is physical activity or physical fitness more validly measured? Why? -Physical fitness is more
validly measured because it is actually tested in person. The participant must do the exercise
in order to complete the physical activity whereas physical activity is often tested via surveys
where participants can lie or exaggerate how much physical activity they have.
Chapter 10 Mastery Items
1 . Were you given physical fitness tests during your youth? What tests did you take? What items did
you complete? Did the test results provide a reliable and valid estimate of your physical fitness? - Yes
when I was younger we always did the FITNESSGRAM test. We would do the running portion
of it and we also got tested for the amount of pushups and sit-ups we could do. I believe that
the results were reliable and a valid estimate of my physical fitness because I was often in the
top percentile in my class. I have always been extremely physically fit.
2. How would you describe the status of physical fitness of American youth? - I would describe the
status of physical fitness of the American youth today as extremely poor. Physical education
is not as important to schools or students as it used to be. I remember P.E. was a huge deal
back in my day and we would be punished for not participating but in today s society P.E. is
often looked at as a non-important class when it shouldn t be. We wonder why there is an
increase in Type II diabetes but at the same time we disregard the importance of physical
fitness and how it can affect us long term.
