Week 8 Assignment 2
The Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS) functions as the fundamental data
collection system for all hospital admission records (Jones et al., n.d.). The UHDDS provides a
standardized reporting system which enables hospitals and healthcare organizations to submit
inpatient discharge data containing essential elements for patient care and facility operations and
healthcare decision-making. The UHDDS contains essential patient information which includes
demographics, diagnoses, procedures, and discharge status that healthcare providers can locate
on the patient's face sheet (Jones et al., n.d.). The UHDDS data set contains inpatient discharge
records for patients who received care at St. Clare Hospital. The data set follows the standard
format of all data sets by including patient identifiers, diagnosis and procedure code, discharge
status, admitting physicians, and length of stay.
The Overview of UHDDS Components and Structure consists of:
1. Patient demographics includes important information such as patients' ID number, gender,
and age.
2. Diagnosis code tells you the diagnosis of the patients and the procedure code tells you what
procedure was performed on a specific patient during hospital stay based on their
diagnosis.
3. Discharge status indicates the patients' deposition upon discharge, determining whether
they were treated at St. Clare's and has been discharged or had to be transported to
another facility for further care.
4. Admitting physician diagnoses patients upon arrival at the hospital by performing
assessments and running different tests.
5. Length of stay reflect how fast care was rendered to patients.
