Code of Ethics in Substance abuse counseling 2
Substance abuse can be defined as excess dependence or overindulgence on substance which leads to
addiction. The body becomes so conditional on the drug / substance that once you try to stop using it the
withdrawal symptoms shows up. It is very harmful for one’s health. The uncontrolled use of such
substances leads to dependence syndrome and frantic behavior. People abuse substance because they
may be experiencing feeling of loneliness, personal problem, depression, stress and strain in life, and
many other problems as such. Amongst the younger generation, what starts as a fun because of peer
pressure generates into addiction. There are various kinds of substance abuse 1) Alcohol abuse 2)
Stimulant abuse 3) Depressant abuse4) Psychedelic Abuse 5) Marijuana Abuse

Substance abuse does not affect the individual alone but everyone associated with person. Some effects
are: Physical health, Family problems, Mental issue, Social and economic consequences.

Today with huge cases of substance abuse prevailing in the society, there has been an increased interest
to study and research on this field. Substance abuse is affecting people of all age groups. My interest is
to study substance abuse in adult population.

Substance abuses especially the prescribed drugs and alcohol to some extent is becoming one of the
biggest problems amongst the adult population. In America the population is aging and this aging
population is abusing alcohol or some kind of substances which are illegal and harmful for them. There
has been an increase cases, not enough studies have been done on them. The situation is either
undermined, unidentified or under diagnosed. the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration
conducted a national survey which showed that between 2002 -2005, as high as 63% of the people who
are in the age group of 50s are using illegal drugs, in the age group above 65 it is the alcohol and
prescription medication dependence which is most prevalent, and the young older adult presented the
use of alcohol with prescription and/or illegal drugs.

Treating an adult population is not an easy task .It is a slow pace process. One needs to develop a mental
ability to understand the feelings and emotions of the older generation. They are often very apprehensive
to changes. They need constant support and motivation from people close and around them. Their
cognitive, psychological as well as physiological characteristics changes with age. A proper
understanding of their state of mind and their situation needs to be thoroughly studied. With this the
counselor needs to have a proper knowledge of the ethical codes and standards to deal with such adults
