INTERNET COMMUNICATION2I clearly remember the first time I experienced the World Wide Web.I was an Airman inthe Air Force andwastaskedtotransmit ouroffice’sdaily transactions tothesquadron’scomputer roomusing the internet.This technology was eye opening toacountry boy from Iowalike myself.At thispoint inthe Internet revolution,the world wasjustbeginning to experiencethe Internetandmanycould only begin to imaginewhatthe futuremightofferin day to daycommunications.Onlinenewcomerslike CompuServe and America Online werejust beginningtoshowoff their flashy new applications.Fast forward twenty-five yearsandInternetnowprovides a vast array of communication methods.In this paper, I will examine threemethods ofcommunicationin the arena of social mediasecuritywhilesearchingfor clues to determine thevalidity, andapplicabilityof themessages.I will then discuss theinfluence of web-basedinformation on global citizenship and multicultural understanding. Finally I will present threemajor factors that I feelare a requirementwhenconsideringanInternet source for inclusioninaresearchdocument.Today’s social media altersour lives and institutions ina mannerthat we are onlybeginning torealize.In a recently published Forrester ForecastView report titledForresterResearch World Online Population Forecast(Global),2012 To 2017found that,2.4 billionpeople across the world use the Internet on a regular basis i.e., at least once a monthfromhome, school, work, or any other location via a PC or a non-PC (mobile) Internet access device.(Miglani, 2012)The report goes on to state, “Internet useis expectedtogrow to 3.5 billionusersby 2017,representingnearlyhalf of the 2017expectedoverall world population of 7.4 billion.Theuse of theinternet and social mediatruly isaworld-widefunctionandexpands across allcontinents,nations and countries.As theforms of communication and numbers of userscontinue to multiply, so are the security risks involved with using this technology.Throughan
