Introduction
Protecting information and data in health care is more important today than at any time in
history. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), is a
nondiscrimination law within human service or health care organizations (Latanya Sweeney,
1997). In August 21, 1996 this federal law was enacted and the US Congress did this. The law
mainly designed to develop the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system. Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act exists for two main reasons, to protect the
confidentiality of your personal health information and it ensures you preserve the health
insurance when you changing jobs. It suggests a set of standards and it tries to control the
electronic exchange of health information. Also this law protects the security and privacy of
electronic health information (Latanya Sweeney, 1997). Practically all parts of health care are
covered by this HIPPA legislature. Any health care information which is communicated or
transmitted electronically is covered by this important legislature. One of the key purposes of
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is to help the US Department of
Health and Human Services and US Congress to perform and develop the regulations concerning
the transmission and maintenance of health information of patient. Failure to meet the terms of
HIPAA requirements can result in criminal and civil penalties with strict disciplinary actions
including termination. These criminal and civil penalties can apply to both individuals and
organization (Latanya Sweeney, 1997).
