Training Tip Guide 3 Overview of an Operating System An operating system is the core software component of your computer. It performs many functions and is an interface between your computer and the outside world. The operating system provides an interface to these many parts using what is referred to as "drivers". This is why sometimes when you install a new printer or other piece of hardware, your system will ask you to install more software called a driver. Training Tip Guide 4 There are six different editions of Windows® 7, the Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, the Starter, the enterprise, and Home Basic. The first three, are sold retail and the other three are sold on new systems, volume licensing and certain developing countries' markets. Installation of Windows® Opertating System There are several ways of installing Windows7® Operating System. It depends on whether you have an operating system already installed. For purposes of this training manual we will be installing on to a computer that is running Windows® XP®. To install Windows® 7, you will need to decide whether you are installing the 32 - or 62 - bit. With your computer on and Windows XP running, do one of the following: • If you've downloaded Windows 7, browse to the installation file you downloaded, and then double - click it (often identified as an Application file under the Type column). • If you have a Windows 7 installation disc, insert the disc into your computer. Setup should start automatically. If it doesn't, click Start, click My Computer, open the Windows 7 installation disc on your DVD drive, and then double - click setup.exe. • If you've downloaded Windows 7 installation files onto a USB flash drive, insert the drive into your computer. Setup should start automatically. If it doesn't, click the Start button, click Computer, double - click the drive, and then double - click setup.exe. 2. On the Install Windows page, click Install now.
