Reading and Understanding a Research Report
You will be applying the Five Questions that have been discussed during the quarter to the research
report, “Physiologic effects of first-time sitting among male patients after coronary artery bypass graft
surgery,” (Price, 2006).
NOTE: These are not yes or no questions, so all of them will need some explanation of your
rationale for answering them the way you do. The point values given with each question should cue
you as to the elements expected in your response.
I. Why ask that question? What do we already know?
Read the Abstract, Introductory section, Literature Review, and the first part of Discussion.
1. What is the research problem the general gap in knowledge? (2 points)
2. What is known about orthostatic responses in general? (3 points)
3. The report states that existing studies on dangling are limited to the four summarized
in Table One. Identify 4 problems that limit the ability to generalize the results of
these prior studies and therefore limit their usefulness. (4 points)
4. What is the stated purpose of this study? (2 points)
5. State the null hypothesis for this study. (not stated in the report) (1 point)
6. Evaluate the literature review in terms of currency and quality of sources. Give
specific examples to illustrate your points. (4 points)
II How were those people studied? Why was the study done that way?
Read the Methods section.
1. Given that the overall design for this study is quantitative, categorize the type of
design further in relation to the factors of time, control, and function. Do you agree
with the author’s categorization of this study as non-experimental based on the
discussion in your text on pages 190-192 related to quasi-experimental and
experimental designs? Explain your rationale for each way you have categorized
the study. (5 points)
2. Identify the 7 variables in the study and designate whether they are independent or
dependent variables? For points both the variable and the designation must be
correct i.e. smoking independent variable. (7 points)
3. Describe how each of the above variables is “operationalized” or measured. (7
points)
