What is Depression?
There is no single cause of depression. It can occur for a variety of
reasons, and it has many different triggers. Depression affects how people think,
feel and act. Depression makes it more difficult to manage from day to day and
interferes with studies, work, and relationships. Depression could lead to
chemical dependency and substance abuse if it is not treated and maintained.
Depression is not a illness that goes away but depression can be controlled
depending upon the treatments, medication and therapy sessions. A depressed
person can control the rollercoasters of emotions if they comply with the help that
s offered to them. As hard as it may be to attend sessions and take medications
prescribed, it is important because depression can get worse and sometimes can
lead to fatality.
Symptoms/de fining characteristics of chosen illness.
The persistent feeling of sadness or loss of interest that characterizes
major depression can lead to a range of behavioral and physical symptoms. These may
include changes in sleep, appetite, energy level, concentration, daily behavior, or self-
esteem. Depression can also be associated with thoughts of suicide. People with
depression tend to want to be alone for most of their time because anyone else's
happiness or great mood does not make them any better. Although, it helps them to be
around someone that is positive and helps the depressed person to express their
feelings and trust that no judgment about their thoughts will not be insulted. A depressed
individual needs a person to listen and have a positive attitude while they release
emotions and any negative thoughts they may be experiencing.
Characteristics of depression can be noticed if the person is always alone, has
no interaction with others and has a nonchalant attitude towards their emotions.
Activities with friends/families are not an option for a depressed person, they tend to feel
that they're always being judged or just not go enough to engage in outings with others.
When talking to a person with depression, one has to be very selective on the
conversation because depressed people often feel targeted or offensive.
