Introduction

I have been completed the reading of chapter 12 Supplement” of Mathematics in Our World. I
have chosen Problem #6 from exercises 1 through 10 on page 686 and problem #18 from
exercises 11 through 22 on pages 687-688. In these questions I have identified the types of
misrepresentation or misuse such as Suspect Samples, Asking Biased Questions, and Misleading
Graphs.

Exercise 1 (Problem #6)

6. In an ad for moisturizing lotion, the following claim is made: “. . . it’s the #1
dermatologist recommended brand.” What is misleading about the claim?
Based on the given information, I would consider it is a misrepresentation. (Chapter 12
Supplement” of Mathematics in Our World)

According to the problem, “#1dermatologist recommended brand”. Number questions can be
asked on it. The criteria for these dermatologists this ranking is not given. The questions on
criteria include ‘is the ranking done according to the research conducted’, ‘is working
experienced considered for ranking’, ‘is the ranking done according to their qualification’, ‘is the
ranking done according to their abilities’ and so on. Therefore, there is no appropriate description
for the number #1.

Another misrepresentation of information is ‘the number of participants who are participated in
the ranking system is not included. It should be given that the ranking is done taking all the
