Notebook components
Pre-lab (Must be completed before the start of the lab period}
• Purpose of experiment
• Materials/Methods
• Step-by-step procedure/methods taken (sketch or flow chart)
• Hypothesis and predictions
Post-lab (To be completed during/after experiment is carried out)
• Data/Results
• Analysis/lnterpretation
• Future steps
A detailed explanation of what to include in each section is included below in the Guidelines
section.
Why do we do this? Recording procedures in your notebook in advance (including deviations
from published protocols), noting observations and data (including procedural mistakes or
last-minute changes) as the procedure is performed (your memory is NOT reliable!), and
analyzing results immediately following the laboratory experiment is critical to ensuring
documentation is of the highest quality, consistent, and trust-worthy.
Formatting Instructions
To quickly and easily organize your notebook, please use the Headings formatting options.
Headings not only change the font characteristics of your text, they also can be used to
organize a document in the table of contents!
Instructions
Each experiment (as designated by a different protocol in the lab manual) should be entitled
using the "Heading 1" style.
You can use "Heading 2" style for replicative trials within one experiment, or if there are
related sub-experiments (e.g. Period 1 and Period 2; different host testing, etc).
"Insert" a Page Break at the beginning of each new experiment so that the new entry starts on
a new page.
