BUS 610 Week 5 DQ 2 Virtual Organizations Describe the evolution of the virtual organization. What are the pros and cons associated with this design? Provide examples of three technological devices/concepts that have had the greatest impact on virtual organizations. A Virtual Organization is a company whose employees work apart through computers and usually communicate through e-mail or groupware, but look like a single organization in one place. The technologies of today allow for members of these groups to meet in cyberspace rather than in physical space. Virtual organizations use the Internet and different digital technologies to achieve common goals, such as collaborating, sharing information, solving problems, and scheduling activities. The pros of a virtual organization are that it reduces the amount of traveling needed, there is less cost for travel, and there’s a lot of flexibility as far as work hours are concerned. The cons are that “in virtual meetings, paraverbal cues such as voice tone and inflection, and nonverbal cues like eye contact, distance, gestures, and facial expression, cannot as easily be transmitted” (Baack, 2012). Also it’s difficult to socialize with your coworkers in a virtual organization.
